Early summer in Sapporo. Cicadas that on Japan's main island (Honshu) are only seen at high elevations have simultaneously begun emerging as adults in forests here. Such groves are overrun with cicadas. Although it is evening, here there are nymphs that are still climbing the trees. This grove of trees is in a residential area, but Hokkaido red squirrels and various types of wild birds can be seen. I don't know what the local residents think about it, but because of my interest in nature photography, for me this grove is a treasure house of photo subjects. Shot in macro mode with the LED light on. |

Viewed in close-up like this, at the moment of emergence the cicada looks rather like a monster or the Alien. What we are really seeing is the mystery of life. From straight on, or rather from straight below, the photographer frames a bold symmetric composition with the subject in the center. And the comment that the LED light was on helps us imagine something of the photographer's struggle to get the shot. (Judge:Yokogi ALAO) |
