Profile

Sho Niiro

Niiro was born in Yokohama in 1982. He graduated from Azabu Gakuen and dropped out of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Waseda University. In 2000, he was so impressed with the works of Ikko Narahara that he aspired to become a photographer. For 6 years from 2007, he took photographs while working at the reception of a hostel located in Sanya, and as a result of his work published Japan’s first photobook backed by crowd funding. For 2 years from 2009, he was active as a member of Gallery Niepce, an independent gallery in Yotsuya, Shinjuku, and owned by Takehiko Nakafuji. After this, he has been active as a photographer in Tokyo and working on the theme of disappearing cities. Through his experience as an instructor during workshops held at the Kawasaki City Museum, he has also been extensively active teaching digital photographic techniques at Digital Laboratory Papyrus in Meguro, Tokyo, from June 2018. His main photo collections are “Sanya” (2011, Zen Foto Gallery), “Another Side” (2012, Libro Arte), “Tsukiji Zero” (2015, Fugensha), and “PEELING CITY” (2017, Fugensha). He is currently working on serializing “Tokyo Destroy Mapping”, a photo city theory for “yom yom”, the Shinchosha e-book.
