Digital SLR Camera: K-7

K-7: A true performer inheriting the legacy of PENTAX masterpieces

Opening up creative possibilities by overcoming tough shooting conditions

DR II dust-removal mechanism to shake dust
from the image sensor by supersonic vibrations

To improve dust-removal efficiency, the momentum of the dust-cleaning vibrations is more important than the amplitude. By applying shifting the low-pass located in front of the CMOS image sensor at supersonic speed using a piezoelectric element, the K-7 generates approximately 60,000 to 90,000 supersonic vibrations per second. This effectively removes all kinds of dust, including the sticky and electrostatically charged particles that were difficult to remove with previous mechanisms.

Dust-alert system
to warn of the presence of dust particles

Often the photographer is unaware of minute dust particles clinging to the image sensor during shooting, realizing their presence only when seeing them as dust spots on the magnified image. PENTAX has successfully solved this problem with the development of an innovative dust-alert system. This user-friendly system detects dust particles clinging to the image sensor and indicates their position on the LCD monitor. Once the dust particles have been identified, they can be easily removed by employing the supersonic vibrations of DR II mechanism, by using a dust blower, or though the use of the optional cleaning kit.

Large-capacity D-LI90 battery
to record up to 980 images

The K-7 is powered by the D-LI90 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery. When fully recharged, its extra-large 1860mAh capacity allows the capture of up to 980 still images.* The optional D-BG4 Battery Grip accepts world-standard AA-size batteries, in addition to the standard D-LI90 rechargeable battery, to solve the problem of unexpected battery shortage.

* Based on test results using a fresh D-LI90 battery, at a temperature of 23°C and without use of a built-in auto flash. The number of recordable images may vary depending on actual shooting conditions.

Special grip design and material
to optimize holding comfort

PENTAX's goals in downsizing the camera body were not simply to make the overall size smaller, but to assure a perfect fit for the photographer's hand. Both the grip and the hollow finger hook called the wing, positioned on the camera body opposite the grip, are designed to optimize the K-7's holding comfort. The front e-dial is made of a non-slippery rubber material, with an ideally slanted rotational axis to improve operability.

Function-specific control buttons
for direct-access convenience

To further enhance the K-7's operability, PENTAX added ISO and LV (Live View) buttons to the independent RAW button. Extensive research and verification were made to ensure the perfect positioning and stroke for these buttons, so the photographer is assured of quick and easy access without confusion. Because of the careful design of the K-7, all of the control actions are surely and comfortably felt by the hands, even when wearing gloves.

Highly durable shutter unit,
with a life span of more than 100,000 shutter releases

The K-7 incorporates a newly designed high-speed, high-durability shutter unit. A reduction in the weight of the shutter blades, optimization of magnetic attraction to generate more driving force from the motor, and the use of highly abrasion-resistant parts all combine in a shutter unit that assures accurate, responsive operation at all shutter speeds, from 30 seconds to a top speed of 1/8000 second. Designed durable and dependable, it is designed to withstand more than 100,000 shutter releases.

Hybrid stainless-steel chassis
to protect internal mechanisms

Since the chassis is the main frame of a camera, PENTAX made use of dependable, high-rigidity stainless steel — a material also highly resistant to corrosion. By combining this chassis with high-shock-absorbency molded components, PENTAX has created a unique hybrid structure for the K-7. With the added strength of the magnesium alloy casing, the K-7 assures the unbelievable ruggedness, dependability and durability required of a real field camera.
