Digital SLR Camera: K-7

K-7: A true performer inheriting the legacy of PENTAX masterpieces

Inventing new possibilities in photographic approach and visual expression

Digital level
for effortless alignment of the horizon and skyline

A level image is important, because this affects the overall impression of the image to a great extent. The K-7's digital level can be used not only to level the image, but also for minute adjustment of image composition, by referring to its bar-graph indicator, This indicator can be displayed either in the viewfinder or on the LCD monitor, with a choice of a vertical or horizontal format. The digital level assures quick, effortless and accurate leveling of all images — even with imagestt lacking a base line, or nightscapes with an obscured skyline.

New live-view display,
compatible with Contrast AF and Face-Recognition AF modes

The K-7's live-view display is far more user-friendly than previous versions. With a single push of the LV (Live View) button on the back of the camera body, you can instantly switch from viewfinder shooting to live-view shooting. With the camera set to standby mode, you are free to choose the desired settings for exposure, white balance and other factors. One push of the AF button assures sharp, crisp focus on the subject. You can also take advantage of the K-7's high-speed continuous-shooting function during live-view shooting. In fact, live-view shooting with the K-7 is as comfortable and flexible as conventional viewfinder shooting.

11-point phase-matching AF

Just as with the viewfinder, the K-7 offers a wide focus frame in the live-view mode. Thanks to its advanced phase-matching system, the K-7 assures fast, reliable autofocusing operation, with a choice of three AF sensor selection options: auto selection, manual selection, or fixed to the middle sensor.

Note: The live-view display is briefly turned off during AF operation.

Contrast AF to measure the distance to given points

In this mode, the subject is captured in focus not by one of the AF sensors, but also by the image sensor. Since you can move the AF frame to any random point on the LCD monitor, this provides far greater flexibility in image composition. It also has the benefit of being able to use live-view display even during AF operation.

Face-Recognition AF to capture the subject's face in sharp focus

This unique feature combines the contrast AF mode with advanced face-detection technology. The PRIME II imaging engine's large capacity lets you catch as many as 16 faces at once, then detect the main subject' face with ease.* Unlike the standard Contrast AF mode, there is no need to manually move the focus frame, assuring greater maneuverability and simpler operation in a variety of applications, including the shooting of portraits and commemorative photos.

* The camera may focus on an unintended face in some cases.

Other live-view-related features

• Live-view SR (Shake Reduction) function • Image magnification : six times maximum in AF mode; 10 times maximum in MF mode • Grid display • Over-/underexposure warning • Histogram display • Automatic tracking of in-focus subject (with AF-C focus mode in Contrast AF mode)

Extra-large, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD monitor
with approximately 921,000 dots

Paying as much attention to the monitor as to all other components, PENTAX has equipped the K-7 with an extra-large, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD unit with approximately 921,000 dots. This assures a sharp, bright on-screen image, not only during live-view shooting, but also during playback and menu selection. The high-performance monitor even lets you adjust the brightness level and color balance for comfortable, error-free viewing in any location. It has also been treated with PENTAX-original AR coating to minimize annoying reflections, while its wide-view design offers a clear view of the on-screen image from approximately 170 degrees horizontally and vertically to facilitate group viewing and low- and high-angle shooting

User-friendly playback and display functions
to simplify review and filing of recorded images

Image playback

In addition to the standard display of a large image and basic shooting data, you have access to more detailed data to check image-shooting conditions and camera settings more closely.

Comparative display

You can choose a pair of images and display them side by side for easy comparison. You can also touch them up individually or simultaneously.

Index display

You can choose a desired number of images (either automatically or manually) and display them on the same screen, and save as a separate file if necesary. By choosing a different layout mode, you can also rearrange them to make index prints or compose a photo story, elevating your image-filing efficiency and offering you unique ways to enjoy images.

Folder-by-folder thumbnail display

You can recall a set of images in a single folder simply by identifying the first image. You can delete all images in the same folder at once, or rename a folder to the date of shooting.

Other playback/display-related features

• Multi-image display, from a set of four to 81 images • Image rotation • Zoom display (32 times maximum; display point selectable; advance/rewind to adjacent image possible by locking display point) • Slide show • Histogram display • Over-/underexposure warning • Resizing • Trimming • Calendar display

High-definition-TV-proportioned movie recording — Opening up a whole new world of creativity unavailable with video cameras

The K-7 features high-quality movie recording at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. With its large image sensor with performance rivaling professional video cameras, high-performance imaging engine, and a wide selection of acclaimed smc PENTAX interchangeable lenses, you can easily capture unique, eye-catching movie clips.

Creative movie recording

Even during movie recording, you can make white-balance adjustments and take advantage of distinctive custom-image modes. Select the Vibrant mode, for instance, for beautiful autumn leaves or emerald-green oceans, and impress viewers with your own visual expression.

Reliable exposure control, even during movie shooting

SLR cameras are designed to perform all exposure controls instantaneously. But if exposure adjustments are made during movie recording, the brightness level drastically fluctuates with the conventional SLR configuration. The K-7 solves this problem by incorporating a stepping motor in its diaphragm-control mechanism. By adjusting the lens's aperture at an adequate speed and in extra-fine increments in response to the shift in brightness level, this assures smooth, stable exposure control, equivalent to that of video cameras.

Note: If you prefer to put priority on the depth of field, you can preset a certain aperture before shooting movies. In this case, the proper exposure is retained through the adjustment of gain.

Built-in microphone, plus compatibility with external microphone

Voices and sounds are recorded with the built-in monaural microphone. A commercial stereo microphone can also be connected to the K-7's external mic jack to further dramatize your movies.

Other movie-related features

• Movie SR (Shake Reduction) function • Choice of recording formats: 0.9M (1280 x 720 pixels; 16:9 aspect ratio); 1.6M (1536 x 1024 pixels; 3:2 aspect ratio); 0.3M (640 x 416 pixels; 3:2 aspect ratio) • AV output terminal • HDMI output terminal for type C mini plug (HDMI cable not included; use of commercial cable recommended)
