Digital SLR Camera: K-7

K-7: A true performer inheriting the legacy of PENTAX masterpieces

The essence of a field camera

In pouring rain, in sandstorms or at freezing temperatures, photographers demand a true field camera — one that can triumph over every demanding condition — and PENTAX takes great pride in providing the highest level of reliability and protection against harsh environments. With the K-7, PENTAX has applied all its experience and expertise in the development of an immaculately designed body featuring a magnesium-alloy casing.

Solid dustproof, weather-resistant construction
— The legacy of PENTAX's flagship models

Although reliable dustproof and weather-resistant construction is an essential feature for any top-end SLR camera today, it was PENTAX that made a world-first achievement of this difficult goal with the development of the legendary, professional-standard LX. Inheriting this proud legacy, the K-7 features 77 dustproof, weather-resistant seals applied to different parts of its body to completely shut out foreign substances. In addition, the optional D-BG4 Battery Grip features the same reliable construction, completing a highly airtight photographic tool unaffected by rain, sand and dust.

Magnesium alloy casing for outstanding durability and reduced weight

Magnesium is one of the lightest and most durable metals in terms of its specific strength, or strength-to-weight ratio. PENTAX's use of magnesium alloy in the K-7's casing has achieved outstanding shock-resistant characteristics, greatly reduced weight, and highly efficient radiation of heat, a problem common to all digital devices.

When you hold the K-7 in your hand, you can sense that internal mechanisms are well protected by the rugged casing, and enjoy the pleasure of using an exclusive photographic device crafted from a high-grade metal.

Streamlined, weather-resistant lens included in lens kit,
for enhanced reliability

PENTAX's protections against harsh environments have been extended to the lens that comes standard with the K-7 Lens Kit. The water- and air-sealing technologies developed for the K-7 camera body and DA-Star-series lenses have been applied to the lens's mount and moving parts, creating a simplified weather-resistant construction. These are unusual features for a lens included in a camera package. Even when the lens is used in drizzle or in splashing water, you can keep on shooting by simply wiping it with a piece of dry cloth. A telephoto lens with the same weather-resistant features has also been developed for the K-7, making it a perfect complement to the standard zoom lens in the lens kit.

Weather-resistant seals

Note: The simplified weather-resistant construction featured in these lenses is different from the K-7's dustproof, weather-resistant construction. If you need a lens with the same dustproof, weather-resistant performance as the K-7 camera body, please refer to the DA-Star-series lenses.

Solid cold-weather performance,
even in freezing temperatures down to -10°C

The snowfields in midwinter and frozen polar zones were some of the extremely harsh environments taken into consideration during the development of the K-7. PENTAX conducted a series of challenging cold-resistance tests at temperatures lower than -10°C, only to confirm the solid performance of all digital devices and mechanical parts and to record no fluctuations in the battery's voltage. These painstaking efforts mean that the K-7 provides unmatched reliability in extremely cold environments, proudly overcoming the common belief that digital SLR cameras are vulnerable to cold weather.
