Masaaki Aihara
Born in 1958 in Tokyo, Japan, Masaaki Aihara has been photographing subjects such as local railways in the Hokkaido and Tohoku regions, documentaries, wildlife and sports since his college days. After graduation, he worked for advertising agency Sogei, which he left in 1988 after eight years. He then set out on a solo motorcycle photographic journey through Australia, and was fascinated by the continent and its natural beauty. Since then he has been determined to camp at his photographic locations, rather than staying at hotels, in order to be better integrated with nature. He still travels every year to Australia’s outback and spends two to three months capturing photographs. He has covered more than 300,000 kilometers across the Australian continent over the years. Today, he also photographs traditional Japanese performance arts, mainly Osaka-style rakugo comic storytelling. He was named a Friend of Tasmania in 2005, and has been serving as a goodwill ambassador of this island state of Australia.
