When I photographed a model with the HD PENTAX-D FA50mmF1.4 SDM AW, what first surprised me was the sharpness and clearness of the images it produced. Its newly developed ring-type ultrasonic wave motor SDM assured both high-speed autofocusing and quiet operations. It provided a definite advantage in fast-paced portrait photography, letting me flawlessly capture all the model’s expressions. Another noteworthy feature of this lens was its minimum focusing distance of 0.4 meters, which let me move in a step closer to the model and capture eye-catching close-up images.

The HD PENTAX-D FA50mmF1.4 SDM AW is a Star-series lens capable of producing extremely sharp images. I was captivated by its outstanding resolving power and sharpness. When coupled with the camera’s Pixel Shift Resolution System, it delivered much greater resolving power, capturing even the minute details of distant scenes. At open aperture, it produced a very shallow depth of field and a natural, smooth bokeh (defocus) effect. It has a filter size of 72 millimeters, which is relatively large for a standard lens. I realized, however, that it helped minimize vignetting to produce a beautifully shaped circular bokeh effect. All in all, I can say that this is a nearly perfect standard lens.
