[Question] Details on the flash modes.
To use the flash, slide the flash open switch down to raise the flash. The flash only fires when raised. ![]() You can change the flash mode by pressing the flash button when the flash is raised. The default setting is [Auto]. ![]() The flash mode icon appears in the center of the picture display when the flash button is pressed. You can change the flash mode by pressing the flash button. ![]() The symbol for the selected flash mode is displayed in the top left corner of the picture display. |
The kinds of the flash mode are shown below.

Flash Off | The flash is off and will not fire. |

- • The flash has a range of approximately 20 cm to 3.0 m, measured from the front of the lens when ISO is set to [Auto] (equivalent to ISO 125).
- • The Autofocus/Flash lamp blinks while the flash charges. Photos can be taken when the flash is charged (lamp off).
[Notes]
- • Close the flash cover when it is not in use.
- • The flash mode settings remain in effect until they are changed using the flash button.
- • The flash turns off automatically in Movie, Continuous, Auto Bracket, White Balance Bracket, Color Bracket and Dynamic Range Double-shot modes.
- • When using AAA alkaline batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, the picture display turns off when the flash is charging.
- • The flash emits a pre-flash to increase the AE accuracy (except when the flash mode is set to [Manual Flash]).
[Cautions]
- • The built-in flash is not available with conversion lenses or lens hoods.
- • The flash amount is not automatically adjusted in [Manual Flash].
- • Do not use the flash unit in close proximity to your subjects' eyes. Particular care should be observed when photographing infants. Do not direct the flash at the operator of a motor vehicle.
- • The built-in flash is not available when an optional flash is used.

This is a good condition for such as; you’d like to reduce the flash light to be overexposed by the flash, or a case in which you’d like to use an auxiliary light to make less of a shadow on the subject in backlit conditions. | |
• | You can choose how the flash synchronizes with the shutter by selecting [1st Curtain] or [2nd Curtain]. |
[1st Curtain], which is useful for normal use, fires the flash when the shutter release button is pressed. However, [2nd Curtain] is useful for shooting moving subjects in slow synchronization because it allows you to shoot more natural trails of light. |
