Cutting up the darkness

The action of taking a picture is often described as "releasing the shutter," but for nightscape photography, in which most shots are taken with timed exposures, it's more like "opening the shutter." The trails of light that flow by while the shutter is open are trapped in the picture, which is what makes nightscapes so much fun: even shots that would be difficult to get during the daytime can be taken easily.
