What are front lighting and backlighting?

Front lighting is the lighting condition when the light of the sun illuminates the subject from behind the photographer. Backlighting is the lighting condition when the light of the sun illuminates the subject from behind, and the light is coming toward the photographer.

Keep in mind the direction of the light

Most flowers are small, so the first thing to do is go around the flower once at its own height. The important thing here is to observe the condition of the light reaching the flower. In particular, when the weather is fair, the impression created by light coming from in front of the flower is completely different from that of light coming in from behind it. Light coming in from behind gives the flower a sense of transparency and depth, creating a strong impact. It is necessary to go around the flower to find the position where the light will be in this state.

Bring your line of sight to the flower’s height, and then shoot

Generally flowers are in bloom below us, so in most cases we shoot down at them from above, but this only shows the flower's figure from the perspective of humans. It is only when you get the flower and the lens at the same level that you can see flowers from their own perspective. Accordingly, no matter how low the height of the variety of flowers you are shooting, it will work best if you are shooting them from the same level. When shooting downward from above, the stem is hidden, but if you shoot from the side you can see the stem, which emphasizes the sense of the flower's vitality and depth. And you can also change the background.

Keep the background in mind

To depict flowers attractively, it is not enough simply for the flowers to be beautiful. Adding a beautiful background to it will complete the effect. To select the background, once you have found the flower you want to shoot, next observe the conditions behind it. If there are various colors, such as in thick trunks or fine branches, the frame becomes messy, so it is necessary to search for the simplest part. For this reason, we search for the simplest part by moving around the flower to the right or to the left a little bit at a time.
