Jurors’ General Comment (In alphabetical order)

We selected 50 pieces from the 2,401 entries submitted by artists all around the world who created works of art based on the theme of “Radiance”.

I looked at many photos one by one. The photos that were taken were truly varied. They ranged from photos of the objects or persons around someone, to ones of grand landscapes and travel destinations. They made me think about the diversity of photography. At the same time, I also thought about the possibilities of photography. The world is probably filled with things that still have not been photographed. Special note should be made in judging this year of the fact that we were very drawn to works from China and Taiwan. I sensed they contained more possibilities for the future. The one thing all the entries had in common was the fact that the photographers were having fun as they took them. I thought that was the most amazing thing above all, and at the same time a lovely thing.

Given the theme of "Radiance," many of the photos had the sea, the sun, or light shining through the clouds as their subjects. Many were technically wondrous. Yet they acknowledged the fact that these were things that already were radiant. On the other hand, there were also photos that made me notice when looking at a photo that "these sorts of things have a radiance to them, too, and they are beautiful depending on how you look at them." These made the heart skip. While one of the roles of photography may be making records of beautiful things, I believe that one of the charms of photography in the present day comes from finding the casual beauties in everyday life, being deeply connected with them, and turning them into photos. That many of the entries especially from overseas were of that nature made an impression on me.
