This lens was developed for the ultimate in image quality, so that you can feel the true power of the lens without having to rely on the image sensor or image processing. The quality viewfinder image reveals subject vibrancy and details the moment you look through the optical viewfinder, delivering a refined shooting experience where you can feel the very atmosphere of the scene.
The lens construction not only enhances MTF, but also thoroughly compensates for chromatic aberration along with technologies incorporated to obtain the best imaging performance.
Utilizing three Super ED glass elements effectively compensates for chromatic aberration, and a single glass mold aspherical lens element reduces spherical aberrations and curvature of field aberrations, ensuring uniform resolving performance and contrast from the center to the edges of the frame. Also, the concave lens element, which is closest to the subject, contributes to reduced chromatic aberration with its divergence effects.
Reviewing the manufacturing process allows for formation of a high-precision coating that is closer to theoretical values in the design process. This results in a coating with a high level of hardness and durability, reducing reflectance to less than 50% of conventional multi-layer coating, delivering multi-layer coating for a new age, which is highly effective in suppressing ghost images and flares.
The advanced lens construction is also effective in suppressing flares for superb imaging that reproduces subjects with clarity and contrast.

Subjects are rendered beautifully with excellent sharpness and contrast even from the maximum aperture setting. Color bleeding, which tends to occur in front of and behind the focal position of large-aperture lenses, is suppressed for clear, natural imaging power.

In order to shift the heavy rear focus lens group, which consists of a large number of lens elements, this lens features a new SDM with the dedicated ring-type ultrasonic wave motor. It has approximately 1.3x the torque of the HD PENTAX-
D FA★50mmF1.4 SDM AW, delivering high-speed, smooth autofocusing.
Also, SDM component materials and focus-related drive mechanisms are selected considering responsive manual-focus operation.
This lens features the “All Weather (AW)” construction to prevent the intrusion of dust and water into the lens interior. Pair it with a PENTAX dustproof, weather-resistant digital SLR camera body for creative shooting in rain or mist, or other locations prone to water splashes.
This lens features a design that neatly fits the large front lens elements while maintaining optimal controls and carrying on the design concept of the HD PENTAX-D FA★50mmF1.4 SDM AW in the same series. The edge of the large lens hood is covered in rubber to protect it from scratches during shooting and when changing the lens.
