A message from Masato Terauchi "Over the course of many years, this island is sinking into the sea," a Tahitian guide told me, adding, "The blue lagoons are the finest entertainment, created as collaboration between sinking land and consuming sea."
There is also a distinctive sense of Tahitian time created as collaboration between the day with its glaring South Sea Island sun and the night with its shining vault of stars. This is an exhibition of photographs taken of the intervals of that place and the intervals on that time axis. I especially want these photographs to be seen at RING CUBE, which itself goes through a radical change in atmosphere between day and night. The result will be two different photography exhibitions, one seen by day and the other by night. |

Profile of Masato Terauchi
Masato Terauchi was born in Toyama Prefecture. After working at Nippon Jitsugyo Publishing, he became an independent professional photographer in 1991. He is known for his "people you will want to meet" portraits and his "places you will want to go" landscapes. As a recipient of considerable critical acclaim abroad, he has given lectures at venues such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He founded the photo-culture magazine “PHaT PHOTO” in 2000. With Terauchi as both chief editor and publisher, this publication has pioneered a new photography magazine genre. In 2006, he held a large-scale exhibition titled "QUESTION" at Harajuku Quest Hall, with the space being divided into three parts: Yakushima, New York, and Actresses. In 2007, using three floors of the Kitanaka WHITE building in Yokohama, he held the "Yokohama Photo Apartment" exhibition presenting his own work and the work of 14 other photographers. More recently, he has continued to bring a "fresh breeze" to the world of photography through activities such as producing the ONAEBA events, which provide public exposure to young photographers. |
