ORISAKU MINEKO
Mineko Orisaku Photo Exhibition "Time" Mar.4(wed)-Mar.30(mon),2009 11:00-20:00 Closed Tuesdays FREE ENTRANCE FEE
This exhibition presents some 20 works of foreign landscapes and Japanese cherry blossoms by Mineko Orisaku, taken on her travels throughout the world. The works represent encounters in time between the scenery and the emotions of the photographer herself. The gallery, located on the very top floor of a cylindrical building in the heart of Ginza, will display a gigantic color photo of a cherry tree that faces outside of the building. The giant tree adorned with cherry blossoms, now starting to bloom, conveys springtime to all of us. Orisaku’s sense of cherry blossoms as possessing both “dubiousness” and “essentialness” is sure to engender an array of feelings in people as they gaze upward while walking the Ginza streets. Foreign landscapes and Japanese cherry blossoms—this peculiar combination of motifs produces tranquility in the gallery’s space-time.

Mineko Orisaku A Message From Mineko Orisaku
These photos were taken in the space between appreciation of time and embeddedness in time. Times when forgotten memories of the distant past intermingle with the scenery constantly flowing before my eyes. Times when the essence of the cherry blossom appears in ways not imagined while looking only at the pale-colored flowers of a cherry tree planted by my grandfather. Works recorded, by happenstance, in a single moment during the course of a life. Works seared into the mind’s recesses because the shutter was not pressed. They are all expressions of time blending together with the consciousness that is embedded in me. Scenes and people, encountered at times overseas, at times in Japan, lead me into a tranquil flowing of time and invite me into a world of my own.
Profile of Mineko Orisaku
Born in Ishikawa Prefecture, Mineko Orisaku, inspired by a photograph sent by a friend when a student, was selected as Japan’s representative for the 1981 Miss Universe contest. During her reign, she met the photographer Shoji Otake, and the next year, in 1982, formally became his student. Since setting out on her own in 1987, Orisaku, with her gentle, feminine eye, has continually captured moments of beautiful landscapes and colorful people throughout the world. She has held numerous exhibitions all over Japan and overseas while engaging in a variety of other activities, including television appearances and speaking engagements. Professor at the Osaka University of Arts.
