GR DIGITAL III FAQs - By Product

[Question] During playback, some images are displayed with black borders at the top and bottom sides, or left and right sides.

It is normal that black borders appear at the top and bottom sides, or left and right sides of images on the picture display, when the direction of the camera differs between during shooting and during playback.

For example, if an image was captured with the camera held in the lengthwise direction, but the image was played back with the camera held in the widthwise direction, black borders appear on the left and right sides of the image (below left). But turning the camera in the lengthwise direction, the same image will be displayed without borders as same as during shooting (below right).

Playback example - an image captured in the lengthwise direction

Conversely, if an image was captured in the widthwise direction but was played back in the lengthwise direction, the image will be displayed with black borders at the left and right sides (like below right). But turning the camera in the widthwise direction, the same image will be displayed without borders as same as during shooting (below left).

Playback example - an image captured in the widthwise direction

The default setting of [Auto Rotate] is [On].
[Auto Rotate] automatically corrects an image orientation during playback.

If [Auto Rotate] is set to [Off], the direction of an image will not be automatically corrected.
For example, the image that was captured in the lengthwise direction will not be rotated if it is played back in a camera in the widthwise direction (like below).

Playback example with Auto Rotate OFF - an image captured in the lengthwise direction

See below for information on how to set [Auto Rotate].
Details on the [Auto Rotate] function during playback.

[Caution]

  • * The image will not be automatically rotated during playback under the following circumstances even when [Auto Rotate] is set to [ON].
    • Image has been shot in Movie, S-Cont or M-Cont mode.
    • 3-frames view or thumbnail view is used for playback.
    • Camera was tilted sharply forward or backwards during shooting.
    • Camera was turned upside down (shutter release button pointing down) during shooting or playback.
    • amera orientation is changed during playback zoom.
    • Skew correction is being applied to the image during playback (correction area is displayed).
  • * During slideshows or TV playback, the screen display assumes that the camera is being held in the widthwise direction, even if [Auto Rotate] is set to [On]. The image shot with the camera held in the widthwise direction will not be automatically rotated even If the camera is in the lengthwise direction during playback. And, the image will not be automatically rotated if the camera direction is changed during playback.

[Note]
  • When recording pictures with the Continuous mode, or during Auto bracketing, White balance bracketing, the camera records the direction for only the first picture in each series. The remaining pictures will not be displayed in the correct direction if the camera direction is changed during shooting.
