[Question] Tips on bokeh photography.

Here are general tips to take a picture with great bokeh in the background. (Availability of the functions below will vary depending on the camera model.)

  • 1 Capture the subject with zooming
  • 2 Come as close to the subject as you can
  • 3 Use Macro mode + zooming
  • 4 Open aperture (A: aperture priority mode)

1. Capture the subject with zooming

Turn the zoom lever to the tele side. The more telephoto, the more bokeh in the background. Note that zooming may cause camera shake. Hold the camera steady. If the camera has the image stabilizer function, please enable it.

2. Come as close to the subject as you can

Moving toward the subject will make the focus position closer, and allow the background bokeh. If you get too close to the subject, it will be better using the macro mode (if available).

3. Use Macro mode + zooming

Set the macro mode, and determine the subject you want to capture, and then zoom to the tele side. The subject will standout with great bokeh in the background.

4. Open aperture ([A] : aperture priority mode)

[A] mode allows you to adjust the aperture value manually. When you select a low f-number (open aperture) this will serve to emphasize the main subject by blurring background. Available f-number varies depending on the camera (or the camera unit with the GXR).
