Ricoh opens RING CUBE photo gallery
in San-ai Dream Center building in Ginza, Tokyo

~Doors open Oct. 21, 2008, the 3rd anniversary of the GR DIGITAL model~

Tokyo, Japan, October 2, 2008 Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Shiro Kondo) today announced the planned opening of the photography gallery RING CUBE on October 21, 2008 (Tuesday), which is the third anniversary of the introduction of the GR DIGITAL camera. Located on the 8th and 9th floors of the San-ai Dream Center building in the Ginza district of Tokyo, the new gallery will serve as a venue for promoting a "Candid Photo Culture" for the lighthearted enjoyment of photographs.

RING CUBE will aim to be not only "a place to display and appreciate photographs," but also a gathering place for people who want to both enjoy photographs and express themselves through photographs. To give people a more up-close-and-personal relationship to photography, Ricoh is looking to make this a gallery for enjoying photographs, for experience the enjoyment of seeing and taking photographs, and for expanding the possibilities of photography by making connections between customers and Ricoh and between customers themselves. In addition to the Gallery Zone, a circular photo exhibition space that can be flexibly tailored to exhibition content, there will also be the Creative Zone for pursuing new ways of photographic expression and enjoyment, and the Camera Zone with a display of Ricoh camera history and a selection of new models to try.

For the operation of the gallery, Ricoh will be publicly soliciting members for "Doughnuts," a support group of people with the common desire to communicate the joy of photography to others. By including this group in the framework for exhibition planning and operation support, we hope to make this a gallery that will always continue to evolve. (Guidelines for membership applications will be posted on the website at a later date.)

For Ricoh, the essence of "Candid Photo Culture" is to "lightheartedly carry your camera and lightheartedly cherish and enjoy the photographs taken." The activities in support of this idea we call the Candid Photo Project. We are moving forward one step at a time to provide cameras as tools for enjoying photography, to hold various types of photo contests, and to work with museums and educational institutions in activities promoting art and culture. The creation of RING CUBE is one part of this overall effort.

A landmark Ginza building, San-ai Dream Center was constructed as a symbol of the Ricoh-San-ai Group in 1963 by Kiyoshi Ichimura, who founded both Ricoh and San-ai, a women's apparel company. By establishing a gallery here in an area known for its high sensitivity and receptivity to art and fashion, we are doing our part in promoting Candid Photo Culture.
