A total of 72 special seals are applied to different parts of the camera body, including the control buttons and dials and the seams between different exterior components, to prevent the intrusion of foreign substances. Its superb reliability and durability under harsh conditions have been proven through a series of uncompromising performance tests and strict quality inspections.

Optional battery grip assures the same dust-proof, water-resistance performance
Mounted to the bottom of the K20D, the optional D-BG2 Battery Grip features the same dust-proof, water-resistant construction featuring 38 special seals. When paired with the K20D camera body, they form a seamless, airtight imaging system.

The K20D’s interior structure combines a high-rigidity, corrosion-resistant stainless-steel chassis with shock-absorbent molded components. This original combination of different materials enhances overall rigidity, manufacturing precision and protection against shock and vibration.

Durable shutter unit withstands more than 100,000 shutter releases

The K20D incorporates a compact, lightweight shutter unit. Designed by fine-tuning PENTAX’s proven electronic vertical-run focal-plane shutter, this reliable unit can endure more than 100,000 shutter releases and maintains remarkable durability and operational precision even after years of use.

Original DR system prevents and eliminates dust spots

In order to prevent dust and foreign particles from sticking to the image sensor, the K20D incorporates the innovative DR (Dust Removal) system to effectively prevent and remove them.
SP coating prevents the adhesion of foreign substances
The PENTAX-original SP (Super Protect) coating is applied to the surface of the low-pass filter positioned to screen the image sensor. Made of special fluorocarbon materials, this coating forms a highly water- and oil-repellent layer, which makes it difficult for foreign materials to stick to the low-pass filter, while making it easy for the SR system to shake them off, even in highly humid environments.
SR system shakes dust off with cleaning vibrations
The K20D’s SR system, which normally functions to minimize camera shake, also shakes dust off the image sensor surface by its cleaning vibrations. The dust shaken off is collected by the adhesive sheet placed at the bottom of the camera body, preventing it from drifting within the camera body and re-adhering to the image sensor. Even though the SR system automatically starts its cleaning action every time the K20D’s power is turned on, you can also activate it manually whenever you sense the need for cleaning.

Innovative dust-alert system warns of dust adhesion

PENTAX has developed an innovative dust-alert system, which notifies you of the adhesion of dust to the CMOS image sensor (low-pass filter). When dust is detected, its location on the image sensor is clearly indicated on the LCD monitor. The detected dust can be easily removed by the DR system’s cleaning action. Any stubborn dust or foreign substances that even the DR system fails to remove, such as damp dust or sticky dirt, can be cleaned with the optional O-ICK1 Image Sensor Cleaning Kit.

Note: Even though a dust spot at the lower-right corner of the image sensor appears at the upper-left corner of the image or LCD monitor with conventional SLR cameras, the K20D’s dust-alert system is designed to indicate it exactly where it appears with an exaggerated outline on the image sensor.

Exclusive lithium-ion battery allows continuous shooting of as many as 740 images

The K20D is powered by the exclusive D-LI50 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery. Despite its compact, lightweight design, this battery provides long battery life. Coupled with the low-power-consumption design of the CMOS image sensor, it assures the continuous shooting of up to 740 images* to minimize the risk of unexpected battery shortage on the road. As a result, you can keep on shooting images without any battery change.

* With a fully charged fresh D-LI50 battery at 23°C and without the use of the built-in flash. The number of recordable images may vary depending on shooting conditions.

Optional BG-2 Battery Grip assures extra-long battery life

This accessory grip is powered by the same large-capacity D-LI50 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery with the one carried by the K20D. When mounted on the K20D camera body, it forms a powerful dual-battery system to drastically increase the number of images recordable with a single battery change. You can even choose which battery to use first, for your battery-recharging convenience.
Extra set of controllers facilitate vertical-position shooting
To assure greater maneuverability and operability in vertical-position shooting, the D-BG2 comes equipped with an extra set of controllers, including shutter-release button, preview lever, electronic dials and AE-L button. This user-friendly design assures the comfort and accessibility of standard horizontal-position shooting, while reducing wrist strain.
