Dynamic-range expansion function faithfully reproduces delicate gradations in high-contrast scenes

Have you ever been disappointed with images taken outdoors on a bright, sunny day because the highlights were completely washed out to white and retained no detail? This is a common problem in extremely high-contrast situations. The human eye can detect very subtle gradations in highlights that a camera can only reproduce as pure white. Pitch-black shadows with no detail are also caused for the same reason.

To solve this problem, the K200D features a dynamic-range expansion function,* which more faithfully reproduces all gradations across the entire image, from the deepest shadows to the brightest highlights. You can also take advantage of the LCD monitor to locate areas that are likely to be reproduced as pure-white or -black in advance, by using either the over-/under-exposure warning function or histogram display.

* When the dynamic range is expanded, the ISO sensitivity range is automatically switched to ISO 200 to ISO 1600.
